Reflections of the Week

Do you get what you need?

2013-02-09 18:33 (comments: 0)

We need certain things to live. We need the air to breathe, we need water and other liquids, we need food, as well as peace and quiet to restore our energy. The more we pay attention to providing ourselves with all the good things, the better we feel. We have a lot of energy and we are efficient and productive. In the same way that our bodies need food, water and air, our souls have their emotional needs which need to be met.

I have increasingly more clients who accept and provide for the needs of the body but consider it a weakness to have emotional needs. Why is that?

A person who needs the approval of others is like someone who is thirsty.  If we don’t drink enough, this is bound to become a problem. The only way to prevent this problem is to drink enough.

If we regularly satisfy our emotional needs we will be strong and balanced and we will never become needy!

„And what if I need other people to fulfill my needs?“- some of you may ask. Well, if that’s the case, get what you need from other people. Surround yourself with people who can give you what you need, and organize your life in a way which will guarantee that your needs are regularly provided for.

As an example I can tell you that I need external feedback to see if I work well and if I’m on the right track. Very often my own assessment isn’t enough for me. This is why I often ask my clients after a coaching session what are they taking from our conversation. What has changed for them or what new insights or clarity have they gained through our discussion? Their answer is my feedback.

Additionally, I started sending my newsletters a few years ago and very often I receive emails with positive feedback from my readers. Sometimes people share personal stories on how my newsletter has helped them. This way my emotional need for feedback is satisfied.

It feels great and this feeling motivates me to try even harder and to deliver even more value to my customers.

Over to you now! Get clarity about your emotional needs. What do you need or wish from other people? Your need for more time for yourself counts here as well! Make a list, and don’t look at it as a list of weaknesses, but as „thirst“, a basic need which can be satisfied and this way never become a problem. Once you have the list, develop strategies to regularly satisfy your needs and you will find yourself living a much happier life!  Go out and get what you need!

A man travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it.

George Moore

It's just human. We all have the jungle inside of us. We all have wants and needs and desires, strange as they may seem. If you stop to think about it, we're all pretty creative, cooking up all these fantasies. it's like a kind of poetry.

Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider

That's the thing about needs. Sometimes, when you get them met, you don't need them anymore.
