Instructions for Happiness

2014-03-19 21:39 (comments: 0)

There are times when we loose contact to ourselves due to stress and all we do is just function. We become like machines who work long hours without a break and loose the feeling of “happiness”. Of course, not everything we do makes us happy and not every task excites us, but when the days float by and our sparkle in life is vanishing behind a cloud of stress and strain, it is high time to create the feeling of happiness yourself!

How can I create this feeling of happiness myself?

Well, I don’t know how it works best for you, but I am happy to share with you how I do this and maybe you will be able to make your own list. I recall first, all the things that give me the feeling of happiness. This list is what I came up with (it is not complete as it should only trigger your own thinking):

·         listen to music (the style according to the mood I am aiming for)

·         singing

·         going for a walk

·         looking outside a window, trying to find animals (birds,  squirrels etc.)

·         smelling the herbs in my garden and using them to make a tea

·         long, hot shower

·         taking a sauna

·         reading a good book

·         breathing deeply and imagining energy flowing into my body

·         candlelight

·         laughing

·         talking with a good friend

·         dancing

and much, much more!

What do I then do with this list?

Whenever I want to feel better or happier, I get my list out and choose something from it that best fits the moment, and I do that with intention and awareness. It doesn’t matter if I have only a few seconds, a full afternoon or evening - it is good for me and puts me in a positive and motivated state and everything seems easier. Therefore, if you want to be happier tomorrow than you are now, get started with your own list and use it as often as possible! Be the master of your own happiness!

Consider the following. We humans are social beings. We come into the world as the result of others' actions. We survive here in dependence on others. Whether we like it or not, there is hardly a moment of our lives when we do not benefit from others' activities. For this reason, it is hardly surprising that most of our happiness arises in the context of our relationships with others.

The Dalai Lama

Happiness cannot come from without. It must come from within. It is not what we see and touch or that which others do for us which makes us happy; it is that which we think and feel and do, first for the other fellow and then for ourselves.

Helen Keller
