Reflections of the Week

Old and familiar or new and exciting?

2013-04-26 21:02 (comments: 0)

The first time is often something special. The first kiss, the first holiday without parents, first apartment, the first trip with the driver's license in my pocket, the birth of the first child, the first newsletter, which I sent in May 2006. What are your “first times’’ that you still remember well? Treat yourself to a moment of joy and think about all those highlights.  Can you still feel the excitement you felt at the time? Were you a bit afraid or rather proud of yourself?

Every time we do something we have never done before, we feel very alive. The chemical reactions in the body change, the senses are sharpened and we are more alert and we experience everything with new intensity. I still remember when we moved to Toronto, Canada. The kids and I arrived at the airport where we had to all the paperwork at the immigration office.  Then we picked up the car from the car rental and finally we drove to our new house. This trip is still very clear in my memory. I remember well each intersection and driving on the highway with the beautiful view of the snowy forest. I remember how we turned into our street and arrived at the empty house. I often drove this route in the following years, but it was never the same.

Years after we had moved away, we came back again and drove the same route in a rental car and it was almost like the first time. I knew that it was only a short visit and this made me more aware, alert and open. I didn’t merely drive the route again but I repeated that experience.

How is your life running at the moment? Do you consciously experience the events in your life or do you plod on mechanically, without reflection and awareness?

How do your relationships look like? Are they lively and exciting or comfortable and unremarkable? And do you go to work wishing to simply put another working day behind you or do you look forward to another day full of possibilities and opportunities for learning new things and creating change?

I think it's time to do something new and unexpected.

Small steps are often enough to spice things up. Sometimes it is enough to write an interesting message to you partner, colleague or a friend. Dressing differently or styling the hair in a new way is sometimes all it takes to create refreshing change. Try it and see what happens!

I wish you all an exciting week with many new ideas!

Live your life each day as you would climb a mountain. An occasional glance towards the summit keeps the goal in mind, but many beautiful scenes are to be observed from each new vantage point.

Harold B. Melchart

Listening is a magnetic and strange thing, a creative force. When people really listen to each other in a quiet, fascinated attention, the creative fountain inside each of us begins to spring and cast up new thoughts and unexpected wisdom.

Brenda Ueland

When you do the common things in life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the world.
